The Thin Line Fest is a five-day multi-format art festival held from March 18–22, 2026, in Denton, Texas, encompassing Film, Music, and Photography.

The Photography Festival is a unique, competitive event that emphasises its “festival” aspect. Selected photographs are professionally printed and physically exhibited at one of the festival’s galleries.

All selected artists are highly encouraged to attend, as they are treated as VIPs and provided a VIP pass that offers special access to all festival programming.

Categories:

  • Macro / Micro: In a photo or series of photos, bring the smallest parts of our world closer. Transform the miniature into the massive to offer new perspectives that alter perceptions through size and scale.
  • Site / Unseen: In a photo or series of photos, reveal the commonly overlooked subjects and spaces that surround us. Expose secluded locations, small moments, secret stories, and hidden details.
  • Time/Space: In a photo or series of photos, showcase interactions between time and space through compositions that capture motion or the lack thereof. Bursts of energy. Steady momentum. Brief pauses that change everything in an instant.
  • Still Life: In a photo or series of photos, use traditional still-life techniques to create staged scenes that depict the energy and motion of real life. Compose and capture tableaus that serve as artistic representations of reality.
  • Hear / Here: In a photo or series of photos, showcase the vibrant energy of musical artists performing on stage. Bonus points for regional artists or stages

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
