Black Box Gallery presents “Grayscale: A Picture Show,” a juried group exhibition celebrating the enduring power and diverse expressions of black and white photography. Recognizing the rich tradition of monochrome imagery, from its classic and nostalgic appeal to its dynamic and luminous qualities, the gallery invites photographers to contribute to this ongoing dialogue. The exhibition seeks to showcase a wide range of contemporary photographic works and ideas that engage with the history of black and white photography while bringing fresh, modern voices, visions, and aesthetic sensibilities to the forefront. Black Box Gallery encourages photographers to submit their most compelling black and white images for this exciting exploration of monochrome artistry.

Title the email: Grayscale: A Picture Show

In the body of the email please include the following info:

Your Name
Exhibition Name
Instragram (Optional)

Titles of Included Photos with corresponding file name
Attach up to 5 photos, as instructed below

File Set Up: Jpeg files, 1200 pixels on the longest side at 72 PPI, 5 MB or less each (saved).

Name Files: firstname_lastname1.jpg, firstname_lastname2.jpg, firstname_lastname3.jpg, etc…

Black Box will provide Free printing, Free matting and Free framing for all of our exhibitions. The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the juror will provide a high resolution Tiff or JPEG file for our gallery to print.

All photographers will be notified 7-10 days after the deadline about juror selections.

Prize & Judging Details

Each exhibition will have 26 photographs selected by the juror for exhibition at the gallery.

An additional 50 photographs will be selected by the juror for exhibition in our on-line gallery annex.

All 76 photographs from the show will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books.


Usage Rights, Copyright & Moral Rights
Usage License

Black Box will only print one exhibition print. If there is a sale inquiry, the photographer will be notified before a sale is confirmed, edition information will be discussed with photographer, the photographer will be sent a authentication document to be signed and go with the print to the collector. No sale or printing of file will happen without prior consent and agreement of photographer. All rights remain to the file and print with the photographer, to be used only with their prior consent. Exhibition prints will not be sold, but used in our flat file at Black Box Gallery after the show for future sale and promotion for the photographer. This will allow the gallery to further promote our photographers and exhibitions to collectors, curators, critics and to the general public. Black Box will shred all gallery prints after 5 years of exhibition in the flat files.

Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, 50% goes to the photographer. If artist prefers the print does not have to be for sale. Print will be for exhibition and promotion only.

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
