Competition Details

The dodho Color Awards 2025 is an international competition for photographers who use color as a powerful tool, not as a decoration. It is a global call for those who use color to provoke, disturb, and make a lasting impact. The competition is looking for work that is risky, truthful, and even mad, prioritizing impact over “prettiness.”

The organizers seek photographers who are unafraid to make bold statements with their work, whether it is an intimate portrait, a candid street shot, or a conceptual piece. They want images where the color “explodes, unsettles, or grabs you without asking permission.” This is a contest for photographers who shoot with their guts, edit with fire, and turn color into a scream or a whisper. They specifically want the “photo no one dares to publish” or the “series you shelved because it didn’t fit,” encouraging submissions that break conventions and challenge the status quo. The door is open, but only for those who are willing to “break it down.”

You can submit as many single images or series as you like, and no text or statement is required unless you feel it adds to your submission.

The selection process is straightforward: simply choose an entry package and upload your images. All participants, whether selected or not, will be notified by email. The overall winner will be contacted to arrange the cash prize transfer, while other winners and selected photographers will be asked to provide high-resolution files. On the publication day, all entrants will receive a digital copy of the annual book featuring the jury’s final selection.

The “Colors – Best Photographers of 2025” book is designed to be more than just a publication; it is a tool for career advancement. Featuring 100 striking images, each with the photographer’s name and contact information, the book is sent for free to galleries, agencies, and festivals around the world. The goal is to ensure that the work of the photographers gets into the right hands and leads to real-world opportunities. Being included in the book is intended to help photographers get noticed and make a significant impact on their career.

Judging Process

All entries are judged fairly and without bias. The jury reviews every image without knowing the name of the photographer or any personal details that could affect their judgment.

Each photo is considered on four main aspects: the technical execution, the emotional strength it conveys, the clarity and balance of the composition, and the uniqueness of the photographer’s visual voice.

If your image is selected, Dodho may use it to promote the call and highlight your work, always within the limits of this specific context. That includes our website, the magazine’s digital edition, social media, media outreach, and selected partner platforms. Your name will always appear with it.

We don’t sell images. We don’t pass them to third parties. And we never use your work for anything outside this call without your clear permission. If someone is interested, you’ll hear it from us directly, and the choice is all yours. Bottom line: we use your image to show it, not to exploit it. What’s yours stays yours.

In short: images are only used to give the author visibility within the framework of this call. That’s it. Anything beyond that is up to you. Because what you share is yours, and it always will be.

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
