Get ready for year three! Gomma’s beloved Black and White Awards are back, celebrating the magic of monochrome photography. Following two incredible editions that resulted in beautiful photo books, we’re thrilled to bring you another opportunity to showcase your black and white brilliance, alongside our esteemed Gomma Grant. With a 20+ year legacy of discovering, rewarding, and publishing exceptional photographers, Gomma is delighted to dedicate this contest to the timeless beauty and powerful storytelling of black and white photography.

Submission guidelines:
• 8 to 24 images at 72 dpi (JPGs: Greyscale or sRGB/ RGB duotone)
• Minimum 1500 pixels on the longest size.
• A short description of the work.
• An artist statement. (optional)
• A short biography/ resume. (optional)
• Please name your images as follow: Name-Surname-imageNumber.jpg – example: Eugene-Smith-01.Jpg, Eugene-Smith-02.Jpg …

Are multiple entries allowed? Yes, you are allowed to submit more than one entry, if the images are from different bodies of work.
Are AI generated images allowed? I’m afraid, they are not.
What type of work? Any genre. Documentary/ portraiture/ conceptual/ landscapes etc.
Can I submit fewer than 8 images? That wouldn’t be possible. Minimum images requirement is 8.
Can I submit more than 24 images? Yes, you can submit more than 24 images for an extra fee.
I started this ‘ongoing’ project long time ago, can I still submit it? Yes, it does not matter when you started the work.
Is it possible to edit submissions? Editing submissions for FIRST Deadline is only allowed up until 25th April 2025.
Do you accept joint submissions? Yes, if you create a work with another photographer you can submit jointly.
Is there an age limit? No. However, if you are under 18 please make sure the images are in line with current regulations.
Do I need to add captions/ titles for each image? No. Titles and captions are not compulsory.
When will the book be published? It will be launched in Winter 2025.

Winners will receive cash prizes and enjoy widespread recognition across all our platforms and social media. Additionally, winning and shortlisted entries will be featured in a limited-edition, high-quality photo book available worldwide.

At Gomma, we collaborate closely with publishers, curators, and journalists to promote talented photographers. These industry professionals are always on the lookout for artists to represent and invest in, offering finalists and winners invaluable opportunities to expand their networks and grow their audiences.

First Prize Overall Winner
€ 500 | Worldwide exposure. Complimentary Book. In addition to the cash prizes and exposure: Publication in the dedicated Book.

Second Prize Winner
€ 200 | Worldwide exposure. Complimentary Book. Also: Publication in the dedicated Book.

Third Prize Winner.
€ 100 | Worldwide exposure. Complimentary Book. Also: Publication in the dedicated Book.

Usage License

By entering Gomma Black & White Awards you agree that any winning image or runner up images you submit may be used by Gomma Publishing Ltd solely for the purpose of this contest or future contests by Gomma and no other purposes. These uses include: displaying the entries on the contest’s website and other affiliated websites such as Gomma Facebook page, promotion of the contests and the photographers works.

You hereby grant Gomma Publishing Ltd a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence in each Entry for the uses described in 1. above for 2 years following the date of announcement of the winner, thereafter the image may be used for archival purposes only by Gomma Publishing Ltd.

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
