The internationally renowned Istanbul Photo Awards 2026, supported by the Anadolu Agency (AA), has officially opened its call for entries, inviting professional photographers globally to submit their work.
Recognised as a leading competition for photojournalism and fine art photography, the annual contest seeks powerful visual stories and outstanding images captured worldwide. The Awards serve to honour and support photojournalists who capture defining moments of global events, politics, and culture.
The competition structure includes several categories and culminates in the coveted “Photo of the Year” award. Past winners have seen their work exhibited globally, with recent showcases of the 2025 winners taking place in major cities, including New York and Istanbul. The contest aims to promote photojournalism and provide a global platform for the world’s most impactful visual narratives.
The Istanbul Photo Awards 2026 competition is structured around five main themes, each divided into both Single and Story categories:
- News (Single and Story)
- Sports (Single and Story)
- Nature & Environment (Single and Story)
- Portrait (Single and Story)
- Daily Life (Single and Story)
For the single-image applications, photographers may submit up to 4 different images. For the Story image series applications, photographers must submit 10 images per application and may submit up to 2 different stories.
The same photo cannot be submitted into two different categories.
Photos must be in high-resolution JPG, JPEG, or PNG format. There are no rules on their size, but we recommend keeping the file size of each photo to less than 5MB to avoid internet connection failures. Digital manipulation and Photoshop-type effects are prohibited. It is not allowed to add any personal ratings, initials, signatures, photographers’ names, or company information to the photo.
Every photo should have a description (caption) with at least 50 characters, including spaces. Every single photograph needs to have a title, limited to 75 characters, and a description between 150 and 400 characters. All photos in the story submission should have a description of up to 200 words, and photographers should provide general story information of up to 600 words. The country and the date of the photo will be added separately.
Caption (description) can not be left blank or consist of a single word. Captions must be written in English and include answers to basic journalism questions about the photo, such as who is in the photograph, what the theme or occasion is, why it is important, and the specific location where the photo was taken. Photographers will choose the date and country separately from the given list.
