Theme: Monochrome: Light, Shadow, Form and Texture.

Building on that idea, a black-and-white photograph is a powerful tool for communication precisely because of what it intentionally withholds. When the seductive pull of color is removed, the image’s ability to speak to the viewer is not diminished, but amplified. The viewer’s attention is redirected to the foundational elements of the scene: the interplay of light and shadow, the definitive lines of form, and the tactile quality of texture.

This shift in focus forces a more active engagement with the image. The viewer is no longer just a passive observer of a colorful spectacle; they become an interpreter, delving into the tones and compositions to find a deeper, more emotional meaning. A black-and-white photograph strips away the descriptive layer of color to reveal the interpretive layer of a scene, creating a direct dialogue between the artist and the audience. This allows the photograph’s narrative and mood to rise to the surface, unburdened by the distractions of a full-color world, and invites the viewer to connect with it on a more profound, almost subconscious level.

We are honored to have Jason Landry serve as the juror.

The submission fee is $39 for 5 images, with a charge of $6 for each additional image.

There is no limit to how many images you may submit. You can add images to your submission at any time before the deadline, but you cannot delete or replace images after submission.

Printing, Matting & Framing (Exhibition Gallery Only)If your work is selected for the Exhibition Gallery, we offer several options to make exhibiting affordable:

Use our professional print service: For $55, we’ll make a high-quality print from your digital file and frame it at no added cost for the duration of the exhibit. Return shipping is optional and available for an additional $25.

Ship your own print: If your print fits within our standard 16×20 frames, we’ll mat and frame it for free. Custom mat sizing is available, but framing must work within our standard 16×20 format.

Send a framed piece: You may send a ready-to-hang framed print in any size, but please contact us first for approval of work larger than 16×20 to ensure we can accommodate it.

International Photographers
We welcome international submissions! However, we cannot return artwork to addresses outside the U.S. unless a prepaid shipping label is provided. Using our in-house printing and framing service is the most affordable and efficient option. Please contact the gallery for questions about international shipping.

★★★★★ 5.0 Stars: Exemplary Standard

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
