Shots Magazine is now accepting submissions for the 2025 Winter Issue No. 169! This photography call for entries is open to all photographers internationally, and we welcome all processes, formats, techniques, and experience levels.

The theme for this issue is “Holding On.” We encourage a broad, unusual, and creative interpretation of this concept, so there is no need to be literal. We are looking for work that explores everything from the physical to the emotional act of holding on.

Your images will be selected based on artistic vision, overall excellence, how they relate to the theme, and how well they reproduce in black and white. Please note that all color work must be converted to grayscale before submission.

Prize & Judging Details

We’re thrilled to announce a fantastic opportunity for artists! Your work could be featured in the Winter 2025 issue of Shots Magazine, a widely respected publication.

In addition to being published, selected artists will receive extensive promotion on the official Shots Magazine social media channels, giving your work valuable exposure to a broad audience.

As a token of our appreciation, every artist who submits their work will receive a complimentary copy of the specific magazine issue their art appears in. This way, you’ll have a physical keepsake to celebrate your achievement.

Judging Process

Your images will be selected based on artistic vision, overall excellence, how they relate to the theme, and how well they reproduce in black and white. Please note that all color work must be converted to grayscale before submission.

WHO MAKES THE IMAGE SELECTION CHOICES?
The initial choices are made by our editor Elizabeth Flinsch. She is sensitive to a variety of styles and methods of making images and has a broad view of what photography can be. She does not consider the stature of the photographer but makes her choices completely by informed instinct and how the image plays off of or expands the notion of the particular theme in play. From there she makes an initial layout and then she and publisher Douglas Beasley go over image selections and pairings, trying to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

COMMON SUBMISSION MISTAKES:
• Not following submission guidelines above
• Not uploading all of your files
• Submitting image files that are too small to publish
• Submitting color image files
• Putting a photo credit or watermark on the image file

Report Rating Guide

Our goal is to help photographers make informed choices and to support organizers in building trust. This report details our assessment of this competition’s adherence to our Photo Competition Standards, highlighting its strengths and areas for potential enhancement.

★☆☆☆☆ 1.0 Stars ->: Significant Issues

★★☆☆☆ 2.5 Stars ->: Basic Compliance

★★★☆☆ 3.5 Stars ->: Meets Expectations Well

★★★★★ 5.0 Stars: Exemplary Standard

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
