At its heart, a photograph is a “(s)Light of Hand”—a form of magic, a conjuring act. It’s the summoning of light and the careful concoction of chemistry, bringing both the intangible and the corporeal into visible existence. This process unites heart and mind, imagination and craft, culminating in a truly transformative alchemy. The Photographer’s Eye Collective and Gallery announces holds a deep respect and affection for historic photographic processes, and with this call for entries, “(s)Light of Hand,” we invite you to share your magical, hand-made, photo-based wizardry in our captivating juried show.

The Photographer’s Eye Collective and Gallery announces is dedicated to providing a premier space for exhibiting fine photography from both regional and international artists. We also offer a fully equipped darkroom for analog and alternative photography practices, fostering a vibrant community where the art and craft of photography can be studied, taught, and discussed.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

HOW TO SIZE YOUR IMAGES:  jpegs no more than 2000 ppi on the long side, 300dpi between 2-3 mb in file size.

HOW TO NAME YOUR IMAGES:  First name-Last name_Title_Process_Image #    If images are not named as described they may be disqualified.

Create a folder titled with your first and last name, then place your entries into that folder along with a Word.doc or PDF that lists your artwork titles, image sizes, and a brief description of the process(s). You can include an artist Bio and Artist Statement (no longer than 200-250 characters). Zip files are acceptable.

An artist whose work is chosen for exhibition grants us permission to use images for promoting the exhibition or our Gallery and its programs.

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
