Competition Details

The Mobile Photography Awards is the longest-running international competition open exclusively to photographs shot & edited on all mobile phones and tablets.

The MPA Exhibits feature the winning images from the annual competition. They are chosen from thousands by a jury of photographic professionals, journalists, teachers, artists and leaders of the photography, mobile photography and art worlds.

The Mobile Photography Awards has awarded more than $50,000 directly to mobile photo artists.

The MPA serves as a platform for photographers who have adopted the “decisive moment” approach to mobile photography, providing them with a way to showcase their work and overcome the initial learning curve. The awards aim to highlight the impressive imagery being created with mobile devices and provide a venue for artists to share their vision.

Categories:

  • Architecture & Design/Still Life: Our surroundings are full of visually interesting buildings, structures, designs and patterns from the countryside to the city.
  • Black and White: In the digital era, photographers are no longer limited by darkroom costs or film choice, and the allure of Black & White is as strong as ever.
  • Digital Fine Art / Visual FX: This category is for manipulated and altered images using additional elements like textures, multiple exposures, and app effects to create an image from the imagination of the artist.
  • Landscapes & Wildlife: In many ways, landscapes are the most difficult kind of photos to produce with a mobile phone camera.
  • Macro/Details: When you magnify a subject, you bring your viewers into a world impossible to witness with the naked eye.
  • People: The People category is always the busiest in the MPA because it’s about everybody’s favourite subject: our species!
  • PORTRAITS & SELF PORTRAITS: The simplest definition is that portraits are artistic representations of the likeness of a person.
  • The Darkness: Think shadows, mystery, low-key exposures, night shots, deep, rich, dark colours and misty, cryptic Black and Whites.
  • Travel & Transportation: Travel photography is about conveying through images an area’s landscape, people, cultures, customs, architecture and history.
  • Silhouettes: Silhouettes create such powerful images due to the simple isolation of the subject. They remove all distractions, and all you see is a perfectly sharp black outline against a beautiful background.
  • Street Photography: A mobile phone is perhaps the perfect tool for the street photographer, unobtrusive, light, and relatively simple to use.
  • Water/Snow/Ice: Water, in all its forms, is an endlessly inspiring photographic subject.
  • THE PHOTO ESSAY: The Photo Essay category is a sub-component of the MPA and awards its own prize of $500 separate from all other categories.

Entry Fees:

  • $15 for 1 image
  • $30 for 3 images
  • $50 for 6 images
  • $100 for 15 images
  • $149 for 25 images.
  • $29 for The Photo Essay

★★★★★ 5.0 Stars: Exemplary Standard

Key Principles of Fair Usage.

  • Respect for copyright: Organizers should acknowledge and respect the photographer’s ownership of their work.
  • Limited use: Usage rights should be limited to purposes directly related to the marketing/promotion of the competition, photos and photographers.
  • Specific Usage: Detailed information regarding where the images will be used for the promotion of the competition, this should include websites, social media, partners website, media outlets, books & calendars etc.
  • Moral Rights: Photographers should be credited whenever their images are used. This includes publication and Media not owned by the organiser. Editing and manipulation of the images should be kept to a minimum.
  • License Duration: The usage license should be limited in time with a maximum of 5 years, but ideally less.
  • Compensation: Photographers should be compensated for commercial use of their images beyond promotional purposes. This can be detailed in the terms or by a separate agreement.

In essence, fair usage in a photo competition balances the organiser’s need to promote the competition, its winning entries and photographers, with the photographer’s right to control their work and receive any appropriate compensation.
